The well-to-do of these members pay ten shillings a year; but the income does not, naturally, suffice to maintain tho library, and annual subscriptions are solicited from extorns interested in the blind, who can nominate a member in consideration of the stereotyped guinea. Two of the aforesaid hard-working and unselfish members of the fair sex help to pay tho rent, and a third who was instrumental in laying the foundation of the library, continues to aid in its maintenance. Unfortunately, many of the volumes are nearly worn out, and money will not replace them. Few of the books are stereotyped, and it takes a long time for one pair of hands to prick the contents of a big book. They look respectable enough outside in their uniform of dark blue American cloth, and white title-badge; but the constant passing of the fingers over the raised lettering within, defaces and disfigures it. Whilo examining, wo espy a type-writer stowed away on one of the shelves, and are told that it is for sale. The librarians are open to an offer for it. Much is being done to make the blind independent, but much has still to be accomplished. We have been to monster teas 1 where five or six hundred were regaled, and have learnt how hard it is for them to make a livelihood, and how the small pensions only serve to eke it out. Now, the Normal College for the Blind and other efforts, will help to give them hope and self-reliance.
